Ski Club of Manchester, May Walks Weekend 2026

This page will be updated as events are confirmed for the weekend schedule. Last update 28/03/2026.

The May 2026 walks will be on Saturday and Sunday 9th & 10th in Eskdale. Various club members will be staying at The Boot Inn in Boot. There are other nearby accommodations for example The Brook House Inn and a National Trust campsite.

Some members will be arriving on the 8th and staying three nights.

Anyone wishing to join a group for dinner at The Boot Inn on Friday, Saturday or Sunday evening should let Steve Wardle know (even if a resident) by Friday April 24th by email.

If you intend to stay in or near Boot for that weekend early booking is strongly recommended.

Friday 8th May

For those arriving early Friday afternoon there may an opportunity for group stroll. There will no doubt be discussion of this on the SCoM walkers WhatsApp group. If you would like to join the group please let Dave Miller know and provide your mobile number.

Saturday 9th May

* Challenging — a circular route from the Eskdale valley up onto Scafell and back. Long (10 miles) with a lot of climbing (around 3250 feet of ascent) and a scramble. Details here: Scafell

Sunday 10th May

A circular route from nearby to Eskdale Green up through Mitredale Forest and along the ridge above Wasdale to the tops of Illgill Head and Whin Rigg. 8 miles, 3200 feet of ascent. Details here: Illgill Head

Some lighter walks in Eskdale with Elizabeth Moore

Some members might prefer a more relaxed walk than Dave Miller's assault on Scafell, so I propose two walks suggested by Howard Matthewson based on Alfred Wainwright's book Walks from Ratty, 'L'al Ratty' being the name of the steam train that runs between Boot and Ravenglass. The area is rich in history so hopefully we can look at some features of interest. Both walks will start and finish at Boot.

Saturday 9th May

Boot Three Tarns. 7.7 miles / 12.3 km with 870 ft / 265 m of ascent; about four to five hours' walking plus breaks. Details here: Three Tarns

Sunday 10th May

Boot — Eskdale Green — Miterdale — Blea Tarn — Boot. 7.6 miles / 12.2 km with 948 ft / 289 m of ascent; about four to five hours' walking plus breaks. Details here: Eskdale Green
