After some rubbish rainy weather for a few weeks the day of the City Walk was surprisingly lovelywinter weather — Bright and cold.
22 of us where set to meet at Manchester Cathedral — a few problems with tram disruption — but all but one of us made it in the end.
We found Andy our tour guide and he told us about Invisible Cities, this is the charitable social enterprise that he works for — they work with homeless people and help them to train as tour guides in order to help them back into work. Andy was a lovely cheery chap — friendly and funny.
We set off to explore the history of the pubs of Manchester but also learnt about ghosts, churches, Lincoln, the Peterloo massacre and Ordinance Survey benchmarks along the way! Andy had some great stories and was very knowledgeable.
He took us down some alley ways that I’ve never seen before even after living for over 40 years in Manchester. We also came across some pubs I never knew existed — however Mike Riley and Anne Burton seemed to know them and had frequented them all in their youth!
After a very informative and enjoyable tour we headed for lunch at Don Giovannis.
Despite a lot of pre booking menu chaos (nightmare!!), on arrival the restaurant, staff (friendly and helpful) and food were lovely and everyone enjoyed themselves — including the massive Tiramisu, handmade just for us that morning. I swore I wasn’t going to have any pudding and ended up having two!
All in all, lovely company and a great day out
