Having been a member for several years, I participated in my first walk with the club and convinced my husband, an enthusiastic walker, to join me. We were both thrilled with the experience, and it was delightful to meet and bond with the other members during this memorable outing.
Sixteen like-minded ski club members including three dogs (Freddie, Fossie and Ruby), met at Joy’s house and what an excellent idea of Joy, strategically placing a pair of skis on her driveway as a signpost for members to know they had arrived at the correct meeting place. A lovely warm welcome from Joy, a quick brew before setting off for a spring stroll, supposedly 8 mile walk. Thankfully, we had wall-to-wall sunshine providing perfect conditions for engaging conversations as we traversed the picturesque countryside.
Joy had meticulously planned the route with what was almost like a military operation, keeping us all on track and arriving at the various planned rest stops. We started off from Joy’s house on Boundary Lane, making our way to our first stop, Biddulph Grange Country Park, where we sat enjoying the quietness of the park, drinking coffee, with some hungry members having a bite to eat.
From Biddulph Grange we continued our way to our next refreshment stop, which was Park Farm, where we enjoyed the delights of a picnic and the chance to recharge our batteries. The serene atmosphere of Park Farm provided a perfect backdrop for our lunch, with the sounds of chirping birds adding to the experience. After feeling rejuvenated, we were ready to continue our walk and explore more of the beautiful countryside.
The afternoon sun continued casting a warm glow over the landscape as we continued our walk. With renewed energy we eagerly anticipated the remaining leg of our journey.
As we strolled through the various meadows, one of the enthusiastic dogs, couldn't resist the allure of a cool, inviting lake we passed by. With a splash, the dog jumped in, much to the amusement of the group. However, the owner quickly called them out, ensuring the walk continued without further aquatic adventures.
Enthusiastic conversations filled the air, punctuated by the occasional laughter that echoed the joy of our shared adventure. Taking in more stunning views, where we could see the Welsh mountains. Our afternoon refreshment stop was the pub, the Coach of Horses. Here, we sat in the gardens enjoying a much-needed drink and had a pleasant surprise when the barman came out, offering us the opportunity to sample planned new menu items. This unexpected treat was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and we congratulated the chef.
From here, Joy kept us on track by her impeccable leadership, promising us we were nearing the end of the walk, with the promise of refreshments. This I am sure spurred the 16 of us on to make the final push on the headward stretch back to Joy’s.
We proceeded our way back to Joy’s for a well- earned cup of tea, coffee, and a variety of cakes, I couldn't help but appreciate Helen Richardson's skill in ensuring all 16 walkers got a piece of each of the two cakes. Linda and I took responsibility for tea-making duty, ensuring everyone was refreshed and ready to relax, with Joy continuing to ensure all members were being looked after and we were all comfortably sat, most of us taking the opportunity to kick our hiking boots off and air our feet, as we continued to enjoy the sunshine out in Joy’s pretty garden.
We all extend a heartfelt thank you to Joy for organizing and leading such a splendid walk even if it extended beyond the anticipated 8 miles. and for her unwavering hospitality. And Joy, I'm glad to have finally returned your silver tray.
Additionally, we must commend the three accompanying dogs for their exemplary behaviour throughout the day.
We are eagerly looking forward to joining Helen's walk, which we are confident will be equally well planned and enjoyable.
