Ski Club of Manchester Late Summer Walks Weekend 2021, North Eastern Howgills, Sunday 12th September

Leader: David Shepherd

Reporter: Brian Beardsall

We set out early from the Barbon Inn to meet at the roadside parking near the Cross Keys Inn. Places were somewhat limited as an early arrival had inconsiderately parked lengthwise, but we all managed to find a space eventually. We set off knowing that rain was forecast for the day and most were wearing rain gear. Very soon our path ascended fairly steeply over tussocky grass going across the east face of Yarlside to eventually reach the saddle. After a brief rest and coffee we carried on steeply up Kinsgriff and then more or less contoured along a rough grassy path via Stocklees to the summit of Green Bell and lunch, resisting Dave's invitation to detour over Randy Gill Top. Lunch was taken admiring the glorious view. Despite the forecast it had remained dry and some were feeling distinctly warm in their rain gear.

From lunch we set off southwards making our way gradually down along the eastern flank of Warndale Hill. Towards the end we passed by some rather ramshackle farm buildings where a few engaged the owner in a conversation covering the trials and tribulations of farming there. Crossing the ford towards the end of the walk we then made our way up to Cross Keys tearooms where they managed to serve us all, quickly and efficiently, with tea and cakes.

This was another very enjoyable day, especially as the promised rain held off. Although shorter than yesterday walking over so much tufted grass proved quite tiring.

Thanks to Dave Shepherd for organising the walk and for navigating us along indistinct paths. Thanks also to Steve for the Eccles cake and to Christine, Helen and Liz for the cakes.

Walkers: David, Dave and Vanessa, Paul and Liz, Brian and Helen, Steve with Jim, Howard, Andrew, Brian and Catherine with Peddar, Christine with Freddie and Fossie.
