tdc September Ski Clinic With Giles Lewis

By Rick Mayers

As in previous years, TDC ski clinics were held at the Chill Factore over a three day period in September. The courses were set up to cater for various levels of skiers, from those comfortable on lazy blues to the more hard core black run enthusiast; albeit the Tuesday (lazy blue day) had not been popular.

When I heard that the Tuesday’s course wasn’t being run due to a lack of interest, I jumped at the chance to spend a day skiing, away from the pressures of work, with two other BASI Level 1 qualified instructors looking for some coaching. At the last minute Barry Lewis was very accommodating and arranged for a ski clinic tailored for the three of us who are all considering taking the next step in the BASI ladder. With Giles Lewis also being a BASI Instructor Trainer it was a great opportunity not to be missed.

The day started on an excellent foot, with the slope being free from any of the usual hazards and obstructions, which it is hard to avoid at the Chill Factore these days. As I am led to believe the other days also had a free slope, so many thanks to John and Barry for picking possibly one of the only weeks in the year this would be possible.

As with every skier I know, the three of us all had our different traits and foibles that need ironing out. After an initial assessment, an action plan for the day was devised and the clinic was designed off the cuff to suit our specific requirements.

All in all I felt that the day was a great success and from the feedback from my fellow skiers they also would agree that Giles put every effort into the day to ensure that we had a fantastic learning experience and more importantly a really fun day - apart from watching yourself on the television during the video feedback and realising, boy I’ve got a lot of work to do.

I am sure that the participants in the other days would agree with me that we are lucky to be able call on the services of Giles on our doorstep and at a great value.

On everyone’s behalf I would like to offer my thanks to John and Barry for organising the clinics and Giles for sparing the time to come over the water.
