Fly On The Wall, Committee Meeting October 15th 2013

Reporter: David Shepherd

The meeting convened at the home of our new chairman (or should that be chairwoman) Vanessa Miller. Once the resident cats, one of which had made several attempts to appropriate the cookies we were enjoying, had been expelled from the room, we set to work.

Approval of the minutes of the previous meeting included confirmation from Alan that the SnowSport England issue relating to Child Protection had been successfully resolved.

The meeting also welcomed the addition of Richard Mayers to the committee.

As many of you who have received your newsflashes will already know, the Christmas meal has now been fixed for the Pomegranate restaurant in West Didsbury on 29th November, it looks excellent, so please get your bookings in quickly to avoid disappointment. Thanks to Christine & Andrew for organising.

The New Volunteers Project is still in development, as is the club’s Facebook site, but an Events Co-ordinator role description has been finalised for future use. The meeting later agreed on a wide range of hiking, biking, golfing and general socialising events for 2014. See the enclosed programme card for the dates.

Vanessa then gave her first report as chair, beginning with thanks to all those who attended the recent event at the Chill Factore, where the club successfully shared a stand with the Pendle ski club. Valuable information was exchanged. Vanessa moved on to propose that future meeting should aim for more concise discussion to help us reach decisions more swiftly. The seemingly perennial issue of committee members getting stuck in the same roles for too long is to be looked at too.

The treasurer’s report concerned setting a reasonable budget for the forthcoming year, further discussion required on this and other areas.

The secretary reported that Snowmark accreditation is now near completion and that we are in the process of ensuring the club’s own ski instructors are properly licensed and insured as we would like to make use of their skills at the Chill Factore. Alan also announced that he intends stepping down from the role of secretary as from the 2015 season, succession planning is ongoing to ensure a smooth handover of duties.

Barry reported that a few spaces on the City walk in November are still available but may soon have to be limited as the event is proving popular.

And finally, John’s Chill Factore report noted the excellent 15% discount club members can get on slope time when booking both on the internet and at the counter. Also, possible moguls courses for both beginners and advanced bumps skiers are being planned for early December. Concerns were raised about the delay in commencing the organised ski events. Please make sure you are ready on time, as a lot of effort has gone into arranging these events.

Thanks again Vanessa, the cake and cookies were up to your usual high standard!
