Early Season Ski Club Instruction Holiday to Val d'Isère, France

Tuesday 12th December 2017 for 7 nights

Get your ski legs and brush up your technique before the main season!

This holiday has proved very successful for the last five years. It offers great value, being inclusive of accommodation, travel from Manchester, and 5 mornings instruction with the development centre (TDC) in small, well matched groups, size 4/5, ensuring individual attention at all levels. As Christmas falls at a weekend tour operators have moved their December flights to weekdays.

Why Val d'Isère and why 'the development centre'?

The resort: Val d’Isère is a world famous resort which, with Tignes, forms the Espace Killy comprising 300kms of pistes, with plenty for all levels and all served very efficiently by over 90 lifts. With a ski range of 1850-3456m it usually enjoys excellent early season conditions. In December 2016, yet again, many resorts, particularly the lower ones, saw a poor snow cover in the run-up to Christmas but as usual Val d'Isere opened on time at the end of November and offered excellent skiing and across the entire Espace Killy.

Instruction: All TDC coaches are fully qualified to level 4 ISTD with full “equivalence”. Many members have skied with TDC in Val d’Isere, Tignes or Meribel. The feedback has always been excellent. Instruction will be in groups exclusive to SCoM—average group size 4/5 persons - for 3 hours per morning Wednesday to Sunday.

Please give an indication of your level on the booking form as an initial guide to organising the groups:

  1. reasonable on blues
  2. reasonable on reds
  3. strong on reds and OK on blacks
  4. comfortable on blacks and keen to explore the whole mountain

Further details may be requested nearer the time. There will be a preliminary meeting on Tuesday evening so any queries, including the organisation of the groups, can be dealt with. For further details on TDC visit the development centre web site.

Previous comment has included: "It was no surprise to hear everyone singing their instructors' praises after day one; they really are on top of their game." "TDC and holiday organisation were excellent."

For some details of previous December holidays read the articles from the Newsletters here , here and here. Extracts from reports of previous instruction holidays, when we have always been able to ski the entire Val d'Isère/Tignes area and back to our hotel, are below.

The accomodation

Having considered various options and listened to the views of many members who have been on this holiday in previous years we have elected to continue with the Champs Avalin in La Daille, Val d’Isere, through Ski Total.

The Champs Avalin, admittedly a somewhat tired 3 star chalet hotel with limited public facilities, offers great value in a premier resort and has always offered us a warm welcome, excellent food and service. Located at the foot of the ski slopes into La Daille it is a 3 or 4 minutes walk from 3 main lifts, a chairlift, a gondola and a funicular. All rooms are en-suite (bath or shower) twins. There is a small residents' bar. Breakfast with hot option, afternoon tea, 5 course dinner - usually taken over two sittings - with aperitif, quality wine, coffee and chocolates. A free shuttle bus service operates between La Daille and Val d’Isere centre every 5,10 or 30 minutes, depending on the time of day, from 6.00am to 02.00am. Guests eat out on the Chalet staff's night off. Visit the Ski Total web site for further details.

Places booked: Champs Avalin 26.

Flight times (confirmed): Jet2 Manchester/Geneva LS811 08:25/11:30, return LS812 12:30/13:30. Transfer time around 3.5hrs.

Cost: £799 per person including tuition. Ski Carriage is £19 extra (one pair of skis or one board only) and must be pre-booked.

The tour operator’s T & C’s allow for certain surcharges which if levied (to date they never have been) will be passed on to members. The pricing assumes 30 bookings and may have to be changed if this is not achieved. You will be notified as soon as possible.

Lift passes: Full area lift passes can be pre-booked. Adult and senior (65-74) prices will not be known until nearer the holiday time when discounts can be negotiated. Those 75 and over get a free pass which can be ordered locally.

Additional places - instruction only: Further bookings may be possible but may not attract the group discount, or it may be possible to make independent travel and accommodation arrangements. However there are only a few additional instruction places possible. Therefore if wishing to take the Club instruction sessions without taking one of the above reserved places contact in the first instance Barry Lewis: b.lewis33@scom.org.uk or 07870 609533.

The price includes airport taxes and Manchester flight supplement but not insurance.

Insurance: You must arrange your own insurance and the name of the insurer is required when booking. Co-op travel through whom the booking has been made can provide individual quotes. Contacts: leigh3@co-operativetravel.co.uk or 08443 357430.
