Project — Tree Planting
Planting a mixture of native trees at Leam Woodland, between Grindleford and Hathersage in the Hope Valley. Species for the area often include oak, field maple, silver birch, and hawthorn. Planting will involve digging holes with spades, planting ‘whips’ (young trees about a 1-2ft tall), and protecting them with light-weight tree guards, secured by knocking in wooden stakes with lump hammers.
The tree guards help protect the trees in their first 5-10 years of life, from browsing mammals like voles, mice, and deer. The guards may be plastic or biodegradable depending on cost, material performance and availability of the guards.
Location and travel
Meet at Brunts Barn, outside Grindleford Station Café, Upper Padley, Hope Valley, for departure promptly at 10am — finish by 4pm. Link on Google Maps, nearest postcode: S32 2JA; OS Grid Reference: SK251787; ///saves.flood.trout.
