Ski Club of Manchester, May Walks 2024

May Walks 2024, Walk 2 alternative, Sunday 19th May.

This is a lower level easier route that the whole group can take in the event of poor weather or can be considered by anyone not up for the challenge of the Scafell walk.

This suggested alternate walk would be a circular route from Boot up to Burnmoor Tarn and beyond to Maiden Castle, returning to Boot via the tops of Illgill Head and Whin Rigg and Mitredale Forest. This circular would be around 11 miles and around 2840 feet of ascent. As can be seen from the associated map extract there are many alternate paths in this area and the walk could easily be shortened and made less difficult by avoiding the ascent up onto the Illgill Head ridge. If the whole group does this walk on the day the actual route will be decided at the time and based on conditions. Anyone not joining the main group walk and following this suggested alterative would need to have the required navigational aids and skills to negotiate it safely.

This will be a long and challenging mountain walk of around 13 miles with a lot of climbing (around 3760 feet of ascent) and rough terrain to negotiate. This should be within the capabilities of fit and active walkers who are in good practice for this type of walking. The walk should take around 7 hours depending how long we spend sight seeing, eating, and of course walking.

In the event the whole group is doing this walk, the meeting time is 9:30 to start walking at 09:45.

The route starts at the The Boot Inn car park, grid reference NY 176 010, view in Google maps.

This will be a full day out on the fells so you will need to bring enough food and drink for the day. Good walking shoes or boots are recommended and enough variety of clothing to cope with the English climate.

If you intend to join the walk, please advise Dave Miller by Friday 10th May either by telephone to 07858 768366 (leave a message if no reply, or text) or email to d.miller33@scom.org.uk
