Ski Club of Manchester, Late Summer Walks 2024

Walk 1, Saturday 7th September.

Leader: Dave Miller

The first walk of the weekend will be a circular route from Clapham up onto Ingleborough.

This will be a challenging walk of about 10 miles with around 2100 feet of ascent, but with mostly good paths it should be within the capabilities of fit and active walkers. The walk should take around 6 hours depending how long we spend sight seeing, eating, and of course walking.

Meeting time is 10:00 to start walking at 10:15.

The meeting point is the New Inn car park; grid reference SD 746 691, Post Code LA2 8HH.

This will be a full day out on the fells so you will need to bring enough food and drink for the day. Good walking shoes or boots are recommended and enough variety of clothing to cope with the English climate.

The route will be north out of the village and onto the Ingleborough Estate Nature Trail (entry fee £2.50), passing Ingleborough Cave and up to the gorge of Trow Gill. A short climb up the gorge will disgorge us onto open ground leading up to Gaping Gill which is one of the most famous caves in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and one of the largest underground chambers in Britain.

From here we will climb steeply up onto the Ingleborough plateau, our lunch stop.

The return to Clapham will be initially via the track that heads down eastwards towards Horton-in-Ribblesdale but turning right near Nick Pot we will trend south and west back to Clapham. There will be an opportunity for refreshments at the end of the walk at The Old Sawmill Cafe.
