Ski Club of Manchester, City Walk and Lunch

Sunday November 3rd 2024

Organiser - Barry Lewis

“ONE CAN SCARCELY WALK ABOUT MANCHESTER WITHOUT COMING ACROSS FREQUENT EXAMPLES OF THE GRAND IN ARCHITECTURE. THERE IS NOTHING TO EQUAL IT SINCE THE BUILDING OF VENICE.”

That is how The Builder Magazine once described Manchester with, for example, the Free Trade Hall modelled on the Gran Guardia Vecchia in Verona and the Town Hall on Ypres Cloth Hall.

On our walk we shall twist through the streets of the city centre, tracing and learning about the city’s building legacy, from Italianate cotton palaces and Gothic towers through to the Art Deco, the largest suspended glass wall in Europe and the most modern sky scrapers.

We shall enjoy, as always, an informative but incisive and entertaining take on the persons involved and the social and political background, and all presented by an RIBA judge (just one of Ed’s many talents!)

We will meet outside the Midland Hotel at 10.15 for a 10.30 start. The walk will be followed by lunch at Giorgios.

FURTHER DETAILS TO FOLLOW.
